Here are some upcoming June dates to note: Friday, June 1, roast beef dinner, 5-6:30 p.m., $10 per person; Saturday, June 9, yard sale with our homemade hamburgers grilling, front lawn, 7 – 12 noon; Friday, June 15, mid-month special Fried Chicken Leg Dinner, $10 per person serving 5-6:30 p.m.; and Sunday, June 17, Father’s Day Brunch, 8:30 a.m. to 12 noon, just $7 per person and Dad’s dine for free.

There’s a BID euchre tournament the first Sunday of every month at Colborne Legion. Sunday, June 3, register ($5 per player) by noon for an afternoon of play. Great prizes to be won! And where else can you get a homecooked lunch for a mere $2? That’s worth taking up the game!

Everyone loves Mom! Over 350 people attended our annual Mother’s Day Brekkie Sunday, May 13. from 8:30 a.m. to 12 noon. The guys were in the kitchen cooking — dozens and dozens of eggs were cracked and scrambled while in the main hall the option of fried eggs cooked the way you like them was in operation. The sausages and pea meal bacon were popular, as were Cooky Marilyn Babcock’s baked beans. Brown and white toast was popping. The pancake griddle was in full service in the kitchen. It was great to see groups of three generations arriving to celebrate moms and one another. This is one of our most popular events of the year — a great reunion for all!

How’s your noodle? The mid-month dinner Friday, April 20 is for lasagna lovers. There will be a vegetable, a regular meat plus a special rolled lasagna on offer, plus Caesar salad, garlic bread, a special dessert, tea and coffee. Just $10 per person serving 5-6:30- p.m..

Comrade Scott Young, Ontario Provincial Service Officer, is coming to Colborne Legion Branch 187 during the week of May 23, 2012. The veteran does not have to be a Legion member.

They slipped one by the president of the Colborne Legion. Patti May was taken by surprise when they announced the annual Legionnaire of the year Charles Bugg award. She was the winner.
Traditionally, the president of Branch 187 of the Royal Canadian Legion nominates the member who has contributed the most to the fundamental objectives of the Royal Canadian Legion. This year, Judith Howe, with honours and awards chair Faye Wile, went behind the scenes to ensure it was President May who was the honoree. It was a surprise, and a resoundingly accurate assessment, as members of Branch 287 of the Royal Canadian Legion applauded the announcement at the annual honours and awards ceremony held at the Colborne Legion Sunday afternoon, April 15.
The award was created in memory of Charles Bugg, charter member of the 1931-founded branch, to recognize outstanding service of a member who had contributed to the branch in the current legion year.
Past honorées are Harry and Merna Rowe, Garnet Summers, Jimmy Mills, Ira Wile, Marilyn and Ray Babcock, the Rev. Vic Parsons, June Haywood, Don Gauthier, Kim Hickson, Joe Nelson, Ruth Kripp, Marj Barlow, George Chandler, Cathy Holdam, Tracy Loveless, John Fox and Paul Coleman.
The Sunday afternoon annual event also announced and honoured the Volunteer of the Year award, this year shared by members John Ton and Glen Hess, tireless volunteers and go-to guys who problem solve and contribute to the Colborne Legion. John Ton assists with monthly dinners, plus advises and problem-shoots on electrical challenges. Glenn Hess is a culinary whiz who also organizes the increasingly popular monthly euchre tournaments the first Sunday of each month.
