Frank Turcotte is Colborne Legion Volunteer of the Year

Frank Turcotte was named Volunteer of the Year at the annual Honours and Awards ceremony at Colborne Royal Canadian Legion Branch 187 Apr. 14. We had to wait to announce the award because Frank was on a road trip with our Legion Fantastic Finn, Elmer Servio.
The award, created four years ago, is presented to a person who, regardless of membership status, has worked hard on behalf of the branch and, in so doing, has upheld the principles of service for the good of the organization. Branch President Patti May makes the selection.
Previous winners have been Lou Micieli, Judith Howe and Jane Malkin.

Save the kitchen on Mother’s Day, May 12! Our very popular Mother’s Day Brekkie will be served from 8:30-11:30 a.m.. Mom’s dine for free! Homemade pancakes are hot off the griddle. Add scrambled or fried eggs, sausage medley, peameal bacon, baked beans (and, folks, these are homemade baked beans), fruit salad, toast, jams, tea or coffee — now that’s a bountiful breakfast for just $7 a person. Bring the whole family and share the community celebration of Mom.

8-ball pool tourney May 26

The monthly eight-ball pool tournament will be held Sunday, May 26. There are cash prizes to be won for first-, second- and third-place finalists. Sign in at 11:30 a.m. for the random pairing of partners. Registration is $7 per person. A lunch is available for $3. Play begins at 12 noon on the two pool tables in the club room. Apple Blossom Tyme Festival dinner and dance May 25

The last weekend in May is always a community highlight in Colborne. It’s the annual Apple Blossom Tyme Festival! On Saturday, May 25, 4:30-6:30 p.m., Colborne Legion serves up an Apple Blossom dinner like no other to mark the occasion. This year, it’s apple/hickory-savoured roast beef with mashed potatoes, gravy, asparagus, carrots and apple coleslaw with rolls, and, for dessert, apple dessert (think apple cheesecake, apple crisp and apple streusel!), for just $10 per person.
Then, join is for an apple blast dance! Jive, jitter, boogey and crash with the music. Tickets are at the door. Party till 1 a.m..

Legionnaires of the Year: Brenda Graham and Mandy Martin

It’s always a highlight at our annual Honours and Awards ceremony to learn who the Legionnaire of the Year will be. It’s kept a tight secret by the RCL Br. 187 President until the event.
The Colborne Legion was founded on March 5, 1931. Of the original 16 members, Charles Rutherford, V.C., for whom Branch 187 is named, was one. Charles Bugg, elected the founding President, was another. He held the office until 1937. The Legionnaire of the Year award was created In memory of the Charter President, Charles Bugg. It is presented annually to a Life, Associate or Affiliate member of Branch 187 who has contributed the most to the fundamental objectives of the Royal Canadian Legion, and to recognize the service an outstanding member or members who have contributed to the Colborne branch in the current Legion year.
The first year, 1998, the award went to Harry Rowe, Merna Rowe, Garnet Summers and Jimmy Mills. Since then the recipients have been Ira Wile, Ray Babcock, Marilyn Babcock, the late Joe Nelson, Ruth Kripp, Marj Barlow, George Chandler, Cathy Holdam, Tracey Loveless, John Fox and Paul Coleman.
This year, as members and guests gathered Apr. 14, the honour was presented to two members: Membership Director Brenda Graham and Public Relations Officer Mandy Martin.

Over 100 individuals, groups and organizations were thanked for their many contributions to Colborne Legion activities and projects during the last year. The list exemplifies how people work together to better our community.
