Colborne crowd marks Remembrance Day ceremonies in Victoria Square Park

COLBORNE — They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
Sat the going down of the dun, and in the morning,
We will remember them.

The weather held. Despite hail and sleet through the night Nov. 10, the wind, rain and cold weather held off for the annual Remembrance Day ceremonies at the Colborne Cenotaph in Victoria Square Park.

Parade Marshall Jim White ordered the parade participants for the march westward along King St. to Victoria Square Park Cenotaph. The pipes of the No. 413 Trenton Pipe Band skirled, the drums beating the march for the members of Br. 187, the Colborne Legion, and  a strong contingent from 429 Squadron, (Globemaster) out of Trenton which is liaised with the Colborne Legion.

This year, all the kids, Grades K through 8, from Colborne Public School were attendance, a tremendous boost to the parade. They kids were well-behaved, respectful and watchful.

There was no CD player to render Taps or the Reveille, but  Padre Barbara Anne Ramer led the service with dignity and meaning.

Poppy campaign co-chairs Carol and Gord McDonald also organized the wreath-laying at the cenotaph.

This year, the honour roll for Br. 187 members who have passed on include: Stan Todd, Albert Edwards, Clare Haynes, George Baitley  and Jim Montgomery,

My father, Walter Leigh was a long time Legion member who passed away Jan 1st 2010. As I laid a wreath in his honour on November 11th it would have been nice to see his name mentioned in the list above.

Hello, Joan. The name of your father and the wreath to be laid in his memory were not on the official program of the ceremonies at the Colborne cenotaph, hence when the list was transcribed, the name was omitted. However, a photo was taken of you with the wreath at the ceremonies and it will be forwarded to you.
